Design and Technology
Design and Technology (DAT) focuses on creating and producing products used in everyday life, both in homes and in industry. An important part of the design process is communicating ideas and final products through sketches, annotations, written documentation, and graphical representations.
As technology continues to advance, it broadens the variety of materials, tools, equipment, and processes available for manufacturing products.
By studying DAT, students can build practical skills and deepen their understanding of the technological world around them.
Junior Secondary
All students in Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 can choose electives in Design and Technology.
In Years 7 and 8, students can study DAT for one semester each year as part of their required Technology subjects. This course gives them basic skills and knowledge in designing and working with materials used in manufacturing.
In Years 9 and 10, students build on these skills by completing more complex projects. They improve their practical hand skills and learn to share their ideas through writing, sketches, and computer-aided design (CAD) drawings.
In Year 10, students also have the opportunity to begin a Hair and Beauty (HAB) career pathway by choosing HAB as a subject. This course helps students develop basic skills and knowledge, preparing them for further study in Hair and Beauty in Years 11 and 12.
Senior Secondary
In the senior phase of schooling, Design and Technology focuses on preparing students for vocational pathways through the Trade Training Programs. Students can choose between three options: a one-day trade program, a five-day trade program or the Hair and Beauty program.
One-Day Trade Program
In the one-day trade program, students complete
Five-Day Trade Program
In the five-day trade program, students complete a range of trade qualifications over the two years.
Hair and Beauty program of Excellence
In the Hair and Beauty program students undertake the following qualifications
Digital Technologies
Digital Technologies gives students hands-on opportunities to use design thinking and create new digital solutions. It helps them become creative problem-solvers, confident users of technology, and critical thinkers about digital information.
The subject also encourages skills like curiosity, confidence, persistence, creativity, respect, and teamwork. These skills are important for working with digital systems and understanding complex ideas.
Digital Technologies helps students become responsible and active citizens who can communicate and work with others both locally and globally.
Junior Secondary
Students in Years 7, 8, and 9 can choose to study Digital Technologies.
This subject teaches students how to use a range of software and hardware to create products and solutions that are relevant to industry needs.
Projects may include:
- Digital animation
- Robotics
- Website development
- 3D modelling
- Image editing
Senior Secondary
In the senior years, students have further opportunities to continue their interest in Digital Technologies through either an applied subject Information Communications technology or a Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Carrer Start)
Information Communications Technology
Topics covered while studying Information Communication Technology are
- Digital Imaging (Blender)
- Website Development (Dreamweaver)
- App Design
- Robotics
Certificate II Electrotechnology (Career Start) (External Provider)
This qualification prepares students for entry-level work by developing basic safety awareness and fundamental skills used across different electrotechnology fields.
