At Ipswich State High School we pride ourselves on the amazing opportunities presented in Japanese language and culture to both our students, feeder primary schools and the wider community.
Within the curriculum we deliver Japanese (both language and culture) from year 8-12, while offering a range of additional opportunities to engage with authentic experiences particularly through our sister city relationship with Nerima City, Japan. This program involves annual visits by students and teachers from Nerima to Ipswich High, and biennial study tours of our school to Nerima. Over the years there have been great relationships and memories made from homestays that will last a lifetime. In 2014 we embarked on a study tour to Japan with 17 students, our highest number of participants yet. We are pleased with the continuing growth of Japanese in our school and look forward to continuing to offer great experiences such as this to our school and community.
We are also very proud of our Japanese immersion program offered to our feeder primary schools. This program has developed from a prior partnership formed with primary schools in the Ipswich region and has evolved into an extensive immersion program each term.
These great initiatives are a credit to all staff within our school, however in particular our dedicated Japanese teaching team. Ultimately, the value of studying a second language and learning about other cultures is invaluable for our students. Our goal is to inspire students to want to embark on this journey, and ensure they are culturally aware and proficient in the language when they begin the next stage of their lives.
