Music @ISHS gives students the opportunity to learn a range of instruments, perform a wide range of music, compose their own music and learn about different styles, genres and the history of music. Students build confidence through performance, as well as developing teamwork skills through rehearsing and performing as an ensemble.

Pathways in music include performer, composer, conductor, teacher, music producer, management and event organisation.

Junior Secondary

Year 7 students complete a music taster course, learning to play drums, ukulele, guitar and keyboard. From year 8-10, students develop their performance skills on instruments, playing solo and in ensembles, reading music and improvising. Students learn to compose their own music, writing songs and responding to visual media to compose sound tracks.

While students develop their performance and composition skills, they also learn the theoretical components and how to analyse music, helping them to become well-rounded musicians. The junior secondary music program equips students with the skills to complete senior music.

Senior Secondary

Music is an Authority subject. Students explore a variety of musical styles and genres, including rock, musical theatre and Australian music. Students demonstrate their knowledge of these styles through completing tasks in the following dimensions:

Performance: performing music in groups or solo in the style of or responding to the styles and genres explored

Composition: composing music in the style of the genres explored or responding to a stimulus from the genre

Musicology: analysing music and exploring how music elements are being used in pieces of music from the genre being explored.

Students can attend our school's Instrumental Music Program to extend their musical interests as well as join the school's choir, stage band, concert band and string ensemble.
