River Dreaming Aboriginal Heritage Trail is a learning environment incorporating a large tract of Ipswich State High School land and the Mihi Creek banks. River Dreaming features a learning circle, a stone circle, connecting walkways and an area of ground containing selected plant species reflecting traditional Aboriginal usage including rainforest plants, medicinal plants, bush tucker, and rare and endangered plants. All of these plants have been planted by students. River Dreaming was designed by Aboriginal Artists Uncle Joe Davidson and Peter Dodds, and Liz Connor, an Aboriginal Teacher at Ipswich State High School. The design concept was drawn into a landscape plan by Murray Kendrick and approved by the school. The inspiration for this trail comes from Ngutani-Lui, an Aboriginal and Islander Cultural Centre in Inala. The trail is currently maintained by Roy Steinheuer Deputy Chair of the P & C Committee who has planted many rare and endangered species. The trail starts with a learning circle which is a meeting place for Aboriginal dancers and performers and a place for students to watch and learn. The trail winds down to the creek. Along the creek are planted rainforest plants, medicinal plants and bush tucker food. The Stone Circle is a place where Elders and Indigenous storytellers may sit down and share their stories and culture. Story tellers, poets and performers are able to use this place as well as teachers and guest speakers. All Year 9 students currently participate in Indigenous Studies for one term as part of the Social Science Course. Other school subjects which benefit from the trail include Performing Arts. Geography, History, English, Home Economics, Art and Science, Maths and Physical Education. River Dreaming Aboriginal Heritgage trail is an important part of the national reconciliation between Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal people as we all work together to build a better future. In May 2008 students at the school painted a Sorry Mural to commemorate the National Apology to the Stolen Generations and Indigenous people.
